Are you frustrated with your kids playing gadgets all the time?

Research shows that the majority of kids and teenagers nowadays spend at least 3 hours a day alone with their gadgets. Most parents have the same feeling toward this behavior: frustrated, unsure of how to control their kids. However, completely avoiding digital world is very unlikely in this digital era. In fact, it has been found by some studies that some screen time (i.e time spent with their personal devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops) is better for their cognitive growth than none at all. This makes gadget-banning for the kids is not the best option.

As parents we cannot close our eyes to the many risks of gadget addiction. Gadget addiction has been reported to have a negative impact on kids' health, emotional quotient, social anxiety, and discipline. The best option for parents is to shift the kids’ gadget addiction towards positive directions. One of the most effective ways for this shift is through computer programming/coding. Through coding, kids will convert their interest in technology to create their own projects. In other words, today’s kids won’t be only the users only, but are the future innovators.

Why Coding?

Other developed countries such as Japan, the UK, and the USA have no longer questioned the importance of learning coding for kids. Thus, the school curriculum has already included programming as one of their mandatory lessons. The technology giant leaders such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg have learned coding since they were in elementary school. Will you let your kids be left behind?

Learning coding isn’t the same as learning other school subjects where students are directed to find a single correct answer by memorizing. In coding, kids may find more than one algorithm alternatives to get the computer program works. Learning coding constantly train the kids’ creativity, logical thinking, problem solving and collaboration skills. Those skills are prominent in this 21st century digital era. With fast advancement in technology such as AI (Artificial Intelligence) and robots, there are many concerns that human resources will be replaced by them. These cases won’t happen if the kids have been well prepared by necessary digital skills.

Why Study With Us?

Differing from other coding academies, we believe teaching solely coding isn’t enough to navigate our kids in this complicated digital era. We also put the emphasize on the digital literacy and character education in our curriculum. We believe teaching IT skills and digital literacy for kids are vital to make them good digital citizens and need to be started as early as possible.

Digital Literacy

Digital literacy is “the ability to use digital technology, communication tools or networks to search, find, evaluate, utilize, share, and create content using information technologies and the Internet.” As we know, it is challenging even for an adult user to analyse the truth of loads of information from the internet. Moreover, the overflow of social media has brought many social issues such as cyber-bullying, identity confusion, and fake news. Especially for our kids as digital natives, it is crucial to navigate them to behave appropriately in the digital world. Our digital literacy materials include digital footprint, mindful messaging, respecting privacy, identifying hoax, social media identity, anticipating spam and many more. The students are also taught the strategies to search information safely and effectively through search engines (Google, YouTube, DuckDuckGo and Kids Search Engine). This skill is particularly important for kids in order to understand how to access the information for their learning; not only learning about technology but also working with their school tasks.

Character

In Timedoor Coding Academy, we don’t only create smart knowledgeable kids, but also kids with good social characters. It can be achieved by integrating the national curriculum on character education such as discipline, honest, respectful, responsible into our curriculum. We cannot stress how crucial those characters are in this digital era. For example, good discipline and responsibility are needed to control the kids’ own gadget addiction. Honesty and respect are also important to control their behavior in social media. In conclusion, all of these characters are vital to make them a “human” that will lead the future digital era instead of being merely a slave of digital knowledge.

"Learning how to program didn't start off as wanting to learn all of computer science. I want to make something that was fun for myself and my sisters."

Mark Zuckerberg - Founder of Facebook
